Standing alone in an area of outstanding natural beauty, overlooking the National Trust estate of Wallington, this charmingly restored 17th. century house, cottages and later farm buildings were once home to the family of Capability Brown. Central for the coast, castles and the roman wall the entire farmstead has been recently converted with antique detail and fine touches everywhere. The en-suite bedrooms open into a pretty courtyard with an ancient well and attractive raised patios. Each room takes its name from the wood used for their furniture and fittings. Stephen, with his sons, make bespoke and restore antique furniture. His wife Celia and daughter Sarah are excellent cooks, creating delicious dinners and breakfasts for all their guests.
Out of the courtyard and around the 10 acres of grounds is a mown walk through woodland and natural meadow. These photos showing Shieldhall in the distance, from the walk. By the stream in December. From Shielhill on a frosty morn in February and across the meadow in March
Guests stay in the recently converted stone farm buildings. Each has its own entrance into the front courtyard and each centrally heated room has its own large bathroom, TV with freeview, DVD, CD, radio and light refreshments. There is a lounge / library with views over the garden and a secret bar for visitors to enjoy.
Dinners at Shieldhall are sociable occasions. They are prepared from fresh seasonal and local produce and served at individual or collective tables. A single well balanced menu of four courses is provided and for this reason dinners must be ordered in advance. Celia and her daughter, Sarah, are friendly and attentive hostesses who love cooking and given sufficient notice will cater for your own dietary requirements. Shieldhall has a full residential drinks license and a small yet varied wine list. |
