Windermere Attractions

There are several picturesque walks available from Ivy Bank taking you within 30 minutes to see the spectacular view from Orrest Head - considered to be one of the most perfect viewpoints that the Lake District can offer. Other walks will take you to School Knott, Brant Fell, Biskey Howe, tumbling waterfalls at Millerground and Sherrifs Walk and the Lake Shore, all approximately 30 minutes from our door.

For a more leisurely view of the surrounding fells wander down to the Lake and take a cruise on one of the traditional lake steamers. Alternatively, should you wish, we can arrange for the local mini-coach operators to collect you at the door for one of their half or full day tours.

There are no end of things to do during your stay at Ivy Bank, pic-nics by cascading waterfalls, relaxing cruises on the 4 larger lakes, rugged mountain peaks to conquer, historic haunts from stone circles and Roman Forts to Bobbin Mills and Stately homes, steam trains and slate mines.

We can give you advice on longer walks either from Ivy Bank or from other areas of Cumbria, the Western Dales or Hadrian's Wall country. In fact the whole of the North West is within easy reach of Windermere.

Apart from the beautiful and varied scenery which would take a lifetime to explore, there are plenty of other interesting things to do.

B&B Location

Directions from the north.

The most interesting route is to leave the motorway at junction 40 near Penrith and take the A66 towards Keswick. At the next roundabout follow the signs for the A592 which you stay on for about 40 minutes. (If you see the sign for Aira Force on the right and you have time, there is a beautiful walk up to the waterfall). After coming down the Troutbeck Valley you reach the A591 at a small roundabout. Turn left here. After about half a mile take a right turn in front of the 'Rockside' guest house, this takes you into the village centre. You come on to the one-way system and once you have passed over a pedestrian crossing with lights, take the first turning left into Broad Street. Go to the end of Broad Street and turn right into Woodland Road. Then take the first right into Holly Road. Ivy Bank is the 4th house on the left.

Directions from the south.

Leave the M6 at junction 36, turn left and follow the A591 to Windermere - this takes about 25 minutes. When you reach the village turn left in front of the National Westminster Bank. Follow the one-way system downhill and cross over a pedestrian crossing with lights. After the pedestrian crossing take the first turning left into Broad Street. Go to the end of Broad Street and turn right into Woodland Road. Then take the first right into Holly Road. Ivy Bank is the 4th house on the left.
