Somewhere Special - Troutbeck remains unspoilt and has inspired artists, poets and romantics throughout the ages. It remains one of the prettiest villages in the Lake District.
With its beautiful setting, magnificent views and well appointed rooms, High Fold is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. High Fold Guest House is set in its own grounds, with ample parking and is less than 3 miles from Windermere and the Lakeshore and approximately 4 miles from Ambleside.
Troutbeck provides a quiet retreat from the hustle & bustle of nearby Windermere and Ambleside. However guests not wishing to drive to enjoy evening and lunchtime meals will find good food, fine wines and ales at two excellent Inn/restaurants, both within walking distance of High Fold Guest House.
Our dining room surely has to have some of the best ‘breakfast views’ in the Lake District. Enjoy our excellent breakfast - whilst enjoying magnificent views over Applethwaite and the Troutbeck Valley.
The design of the house has enabled all the guest bedrooms and the dining room to have excellent views* and all the bedrooms are named after local landmarks. All our double beds are king size (6’ 6”x5’) or super-king size (6’6”x6’) and all bedrooms have en-suite facilities, with modern MIRA showers - ensuring ample delivery of hot water. The Applethwaite has the added benefit of a bath in addition to a shower.
All our bedrooms are equipped with flat screen TV’s with SKY Free View** provided to ensure good quality TV reception for your enjoyment. Tea and coffee making facilities and complementary toiletries are provided for guests' convenience. Bedrooms also include clock radios, hairdryers, colour TVs and DVD players. Guests may choose to bring along their favourite films, or borrow a film from our selection of DVDs in the dining room.
High Fold is completely centrally heated - with all bedrooms having controllable radiators. |

High Fold Guest House provides a central base to explore Troutbeck, Ambleside, Windermere and the Lake District. Its rural location makes it particularly popular with walkers and cyclists - or those who simply wish to 'get away from it all' and sample peace and tranquillity in beautiful surroundings.
Troutbeck in the Lake District:-
High Fold Guest House is located in the village of Troutbeck. Troutbeck is a series of hamlets straggling for about a mile along a line of springs above the valley and set in a conservation area. Village cottages and farm buildings go back as far as the mid 17th Century. The National Trust's 'Townend House', which is open to visitors between Easter and end of October each year, is located in the village and is one of the finest examples of Lakeland's Statesmans houses in Cumbria, having belonged to the same family, the Brownes, for over 300 years.
Activities, Attractions and Things to Do:-
Troutbeck is the ideal place for those wanting to enjoy walking or cycling, but is also suitable for those who wish to 'get away from it all' and enjoy the wonderful scenery and peace and tranquillity of one of the Lake District's prettiest and unspoilt villages. For those who haven't any knowledge of the area we can supply books and maps of local walks - or, if you wish, there are many short walks around the village whilst enjoying views of the Troutbeck valley. Alternatively a short stroll up Robin Lane will be rewarded with glorious views over Lake Windermere.
You may also choose to leave your car at the house and enjoy the many and varied walks, climbs and views in and around the Troutbeck area. High Street, the Troutbeck Circuit, Kentmere Round, the route over the Garburn Pass into Kentmere and to Ambleside via Wansfell are all walks you can start from High Fold. |

By Train
Windermere rail station is approximately 3 miles from High Fold Guest house at Troutbeck. It has connections to Manchester airport and the main Virgin West Coast line from London to Glasgow via Oxenholme. Taxis are available at Windermere station.
By Car From M6 North:-
-Leave the M6 at junction 39. Turn left onto the A6 and travel south to Kendal.
-On entering Kendal follow the signs for Windermere.* (see M6 South directions below)
By Car From M6 South:-
-Leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow the signs for Western Lakes/Windermere A590 then A591 for approx 16 miles.
-On entering Windermere (The Windermere Hotel is on your right) keep straight on for Ambleside.
-After approx 1/2 mile turn right at the mini-roundabout (signed Kirkstone Pass/Ullswater A592). **
-After approx 2 miles turn left (signed Troutbeck) - beware this is an acute turn. Proceed up the hill and turn right at the top.
-After approximately 100 metres look for two white cottages - one on the left and one on the right, turn right into a forecourt.
High Fold Guest House is the building immediately ahead of you.
** In adverse weather conditions, particularly snow and icy conditions, we recommend you do not use the A592 route, thus avoiding a steep hill, but continue on the A591 towards Ambleside. Look for The Esso petrol station on the left and the Royal mail sorting office on the right.
Take the next right turn signed Troutbeck 1 1/2 miles. Continue for approximately 1 miles and turn right at the sign for Kirkstone. Continue on past Troutbeck Post Office and the telephone box on the left. After approximately 100 metres look for two white cottages - one on the left and one on the right, turn right into a forecourt. High Fold Guest House is the building immediately ahead of you.
