Bed and Breakfast Description

Slate Hill is a traditional Lakeland farmhouse nestling in a rural location, within easy reach of the southern end of Lake Windermere and the coastal town of Grange-Over-Sands.

We have uninterrupted views of the countryside from all aspects and an abundance of wildlife. Children and dogs are welcome and with just two ensuite letting rooms, we can guarantee a warm welcome and individual service.

We offer a wide selection for breakfast, which we hope will suit all tastes. You can find the menu on the meals page.

In the summer months our guests can have a barbecue in the garden.
After a nice day out, why not unwind with a barbecue in picturesque surroundings.
We will provide:- A gas barbecue, glasses, cutlery and plates etc.
We will also do the washing up.

The house has central heating, together with a log burning stove in the dining room and an open log fire in the guest lounge. Visitors are welcome to wander at will in the garden or just sit and relax on the patio, a more tranquil spot, would be hard to find. The more adventurous guests, may like to explore our seventeen acres of land, the majority of which is deciduous woodland, a sight to behold at bluebell time.

Our spacious bedrooms have ensuite facilities, which include both bath and shower. They each have lovely views, colour TV sets and tea making facilities.

(Mark & Glenise) are both originally from Lancashire but have lived in the Lake District for over twenty years. For over ten years we were the chefs and also the proprietors of a country house hotel, on the outskirts of Ambleside. We built up our reputation and were awarded two stars by the AA and three crowns by the Cumbria Tourist Board. Our proudest achievement however, was a listing in the Michelin Guide, which is by recommendation only.

Local Attractions

Slate Hill nestles in the Winster Valley a beautiful but often overlooked entrance into Lakeland. The valley takes its name from the slow flowing River Winster which meanders through it and until recently marked the boundary between old Westmoreland and Lancashire. The roads of this valley are rarely more than lanes, it would be difficult therefore to find a more peaceful area, from which to explore Southern Lakeland.

We are just four miles from the timeless gentility of Grange-Over-Sands on the coast, with its grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture and within five miles of the southern end of Lake Windermere. Steamers leave Lakeside at regular intervals and the boat timetable runs in conjunction with the Haverthwaite railway.

We are also within easy reach of the market towns of Kendal and Ulverston, the village of Levens with its Hall and the most attractive village of Cartmel with its racecourse and Priory.

B&B Location

To find Slate Hill Farm leave the A590 at the Witherslack sign, go through the crossroads at the Derby Arms then take the next left turn, following the brown information sign to Halecat. Climb the hill, take care at the sharp right hand bend, then take the next left turn, again following the sign to Halecat. Go past the entrance to Halecat and proceed down the hill, once more take the next left turn, at the no through road sign. Slate Hill is the first property on your right.
