Bed and Breakfast Description

Swiss House bed and breakfast is a brilliant base from which to explore the Peak District. Plenty of parking, a drying room, a guest lounge, excellent full English breakfast or vegetarian option, extremely high level of cleanliness and service all combine to make your stay the best ever.

All our rooms are en-suite and have colour TV with teletext, hot drink facility, hair dryer and radio alarm. Some rooms even have a DVD player. We have made the decision to get dispense with all the beds with 'ends' on. We know how difficult they are for you tall people out there! We have 3 beds which are 6' wide and 6'6" long. We call them the 'playing fields'.

Within five minutes walk there are 6 pubs which all provide food. The four Castleton caverns are all within easy reach. What about a 'walk round the block'? That's up Cave Dale, right at the top, along the ridge, up onto MamTor, carry on to Hollins Cross and right down into Castleton - about 5/6 miles. We can even lend you an OS map. Or you might like to walk or drive to Edale and go over (or round) Kinder Scout - the site of the famous Mass Trespass. Then you'll be ready for a visit to Rose Cottage tea room where you can get a proper cream tea with Cornish clotted cream!!

If you want to go further you could visit Buxton or Bakewell (and try the Bakewell Pudding) or spend a day at Chatsworth - the children will love the farm and the adventure playground. Chatsworth House was used extensively in the making of Pride and Prejudice and is a sight to behold when decorated for Christmas. The grounds are extensive and wonderful for lying under a sunny sky and eating your Swiss House packed lunch.

There's loads more to do in and around Castleton so come and stay a few nights.
For a bnb experience with a difference try Swiss House - you'll be back, loads do!!

Castleton Attractions

Peveril Castle
Towering above Castleton on limestone cliffs is our very own Peveril Castle. The castle ruins are always worth a visit, and it often plays host to special events that are bound to delight.

Peak Cavern
In the middle of Castleton a short riverside walk takes you to a spectacular limestone gorge. 280 foot high vertical cliffs mark the entrance to Peak Cavern. With frequent guided tours throughout the day and detailed information about the Cavern's history, this is a “must see” attraction.

Treak Cliff Cavern
Treak Cliff Hill is one of the only places in the world where Blue John Stone naturally occurs. This cavern also has a very good display of staligmites and staligtites.

Speedwell Cavern
Take an underground journey by boat to witness first-hand the eerie splendour of the Bottomless Pit - a huge subterranean lake. Situated in Castleton's Hope Valley at Winnats Pass, this attraction is open every day except Christmas Day - if it's not flooded!

Blue John Cavern
Blue John stone has been mined in Castleton for centuries and the world famous Blue John Cavern is home to eight of the fourteen known varieties. The hour long guided tours are perfect for the more adventurous holiday-maker.

A little further afield there is Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall or Ilam Hall - the place where Mr D'Arcy walked out of the lake!!
Or you could wander around the lovely market towns of Bakewell or Matlock.

Quite apart from all that there are miles and miles of wonderful National Park to explore.
