Bed and Breakfast Description

Thornthwaite Grange was built at the beginning of the 18th century and was originally the village manor house. It is now run as a guest house, but every effort has been made to retain the atmosphere of a country home. Accommodation is available for non-smokers only. There is ample space for parking in the grounds.

For evening meals there are two traditional Lakeland pubs and a restaurant within 1.5 miles, and a great variety of restaurants and pubs in Keswick, 3.5 miles away.

The location is quiet and peaceful, but with the A66 being just one mile away we are not isolated, and the various attractions that the rest of the Lake District has to offer are easily accessible.

Thornthwaite Grange has 3 guest bedrooms, all en-suite. Each room is large, light and comfortably furnished. Television, radio, sofa, and tea/ coffee making facilities, (with fresh milk available) are standard in all rooms.

The bath and shower rooms are all spacious and well-equipped.

Room 1:
This is a fabulous room with dual aspect windoows with panoramic views over the Derwent Valley and Skiddaw to the front, and over the garden to the side. It has a full bathroom with shower over.

Room 2:
This is a lovely room, again with dual aspect windows with panoramic views over Derwent Valley and Skiddaw to the front, and towards the village at the side. This room has a full shower room.

Room 3:
This is a comfortable room with the same standards of furnishings and equipment as the Superior and Master. The room is at the side of the house with a single large window with views over the village and towards Skiddaw. Thre is a full bathroom with shower over.

Local Attractions

Thornthwaite Grange is an ideal base for exploring the Lake District. But for the days that you wish to spend in the immediate area, there is plenty to see and do.

Very close:

Guests are welcome to relax in the large garden and soak up the fantastic views - or for the more energetic, there is an outdoor table-tennis table.

The garden is a haven for a wide variety of birds, and we are fortunate enough to be in a designated zone for the protection of red squirrels, which are frequent visitors.

Pretty close:

In the village there is a well-renowned gallery which regularly gives demonstrations of various art forms, e.g., pottery, weaving, metalwork, etc.

We are only a mile away from the southern end of Bassenthwaite Lake, which is a bird sanctuary. There is a public bird hide from which the ospreys (regular visitors since 2001), otters and kingfishers can frequently be viewed.

Thornthwaite backs on to Thornthwaite Forest, which has walks and cycle tracks to suit all tastes. Whinlatter Centre (30-40 minutes walk away) is a popular tourist attraction.
