Local Attractions
|
Less than 0.4 miles from the Excelsior Hotel, easily reachable using the Underground, is the impressive British Museum, perhaps the most important history museum in existence, with its enormous glass dome which makes the Grand Court the largest covered square in Europe. Its splendid rooms preserve friezes from the Parthenon in Athens, Greek statues, prehistoric bones, Egyptian mummies, manuscripts and jewels; an incredibly large collection which attracts approximately 6 million visitors a year to 54,000 square metres of exhibits. The rooms dedicated to Greco-Roman civilization and the medieval era are extraordinary. The British Museum is just 10 minutes walking distance from the hotel.
Shopping in London is a gratifying and exclusive experience, the shops display goods and clothes which are ahead of world fashion and offer possibilities for all budgets. Along Oxford Street there are over 300 shops alternated with cafès, pubs and restaurants: over the 1.4 miles which stretch from Hyde Park to Tottenham Court Road you will find large chain-stores and department stores such as Selfridges and Marks & Spencer. Heading south, towards Westminster, Regent Street is a cornerstone of English shopping with Liberty, and the largest toyshop in the world, Hamleys. If however you are looking for the latest fashions and the most unusual shoes, Carnaby Street is a paradise of alternative styles and secondhand shops, the heart of the ‘swinging London’ of the ’60s. Oxford Street is 15 minutes walking distance from the hotel or 10 minutes by underground.
Heading west, the Regent Street stop takes you as far as Regent’s Park. This ancient game reserve explodes with the colour of its roses during the spring and contains a boating lake and various play areas. In North London you will find London Zoo; Regent’s Canal passes through this former and alongside it is a towpath which, in the summer, offers a splendid and pleasant walk over 7 miles long. |
