Description

The Old School is an 18th century stone property with lovely south facing gardens surrounded by woodland in the small conservation village of Newton on the Moor, five miles south of the market town of Alnwick - famous for its Castle and The Alnwick Garden.

Newton on the Moor boasts one of the finest old coaching inns in Northumberland, and its just a 300 metre walk from The Old School, but don’t forget to borrow the torch for your walk back.

We have three first floor double letting rooms, each with
en suite facilities with modern power showers and w.c. You will find a thoughtful selection of finishing touches and home comforts to enrich your stay.

Our three bedrooms have double beds and are designed to accommodate up to two people, we are unable to provide a third bed in any room. Please note we do not have twin or family rooms.

There is a guest sitting room with TV and DVD player, books, maps and guides, or you may prefer to relax and enjoy the garden and make the most of the setting sun.

Our breakfast (described as outstanding by the judges of
the Enjoy England Excellence Awards), is served, at your own table in the dining room, anytime from 8.00am to 9.30am, please let us know the night before if you require an earlier breakfast. The menu is a mix of traditional and classical dishes, and has a selection of vegetarian and gluten free dishes, but we are always pleased to cater for any other special dietary requests.

Local Attractions

Newton on the Moor is situated in the heart of rural Northumberland. A stretch of the stunning coastline, which has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, can be seen at the picturesque village of Alnmouth, seven miles to the east of us.

Rothbury, the gateway to the National Park and near to Cragside (a National Trust House and Country Park) is ten miles to the west. Twelve miles to the north of us is the fishing village of Craster, with Seahouses, Bamburgh and Holy Island being a further ten to twenty miles north.

We are halfway between the Scottish border (Berwick-upon-Tweed 35 miles) and Newcastle upon Tyne – the shopping capital of the north.

Northumberland has not one but two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - a breathtaking golden coast scattered with castles and charming towns and villages and the dramatic North Pennines. Between the two lies the Northumberland National Park, spanning 60 miles from the rolling grasslands of the Cheviot Hills on the Scottish border to Hadrian's Wall in the south. The National Park is a tapestry of open moorland, rivers and burns and ancient woodland, with breathtaking vistas and idyllic river valleys - each offering distinctive terrain from rugged upland hiking country to undulating grasslands and sheltered resting places by flowing streams, often without another soul in sight. Close by lies Kielder Water, with its tranquil waters and dense forest, a fantastic place
to discover the great outdoors.

Hadrian's Wall Country overlaps the southern tip of the National Park, containing the most spectacular upland sections of the World Heritage Site.

Location

By road
On the A1 the turn off for Newton on the Moor is sign posted - 13 miles north of Morpeth and 5 miles south of Alnwick. Once you have left the A1 follow the road signs for Swarland and Longframlington (do not follow signs for Swarland and Longframlington before you have left the A1 at the Newton on the Moor turn off)
Pass the village hall on your right, and we are the last property on the left, approximately a mile after turning off the A1. Pull in through the white gates and park on the drive.

The nearest station is six miles at Alnmouth for Alnwick and is served by both GNER and Virgin trains.
A taxi service is based at the station, although we would recommend car or cycle hire for exploring the local area.
