Description

Situated next to the River Avon and close to Stonehenge, Longleat, Amesbury and Salisbury, this country house has been created from an 18th Century dovecot and period farm buildings. Once a working farm, it is now a fascinating and comfortable house offering high class bed and breakfast ( B&B ) accommodation around a charming courtyard garden.

There are two en-suite bedrooms, so guests can receive plenty of individual attention. The rooms look out onto the extensive gardens and water features, and have their own separate access onto the courtyard, affording privacy and flexibility

Breakfast is taken in the dovecote, which features three-foot deep chalk walls with nesting boxes. Our food is freshly cooked to order; it is locally sourced wherever possible, which has earned us the Wiltshire Breakfast Award for the third year

Guests can relax in the large sitting room, with roaring log fire and stunning views over the river, or stroll around the grounds at their leisure

Our wireless internet ( WiFi ) connection enables guests to use their laptops to check their email and keep in contact with the outside world.

Local Attractions

The Dovecot has easy access to several major roads which makes it an ideal base for visiting many attractions in Wiltshire as well as further afield.

As well Stonehenge and Salisbury, Longleat, Stourhead and many National Trust properties are all within easy reach. As is Avebury which, together with Stonehenge, are our two local World Heritage Sites.

Winchester, the ancient capital of England, with its magnificent cathedral and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the country, is well worth a visit.

The New Forest, famous for its wandering ponies, and home of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, will provide a fascinating day’s excursion for the whole family.

And, for those wishing to go slightly further, 75-90 minutes will take you to any of the following:

Bath - an 18th century spa city and architectural gem

Oxford - ancient university city

Windsor - with its historic royal castle

Portsmouth - and its dockyard housing Nelson’s Victory and the Mary Rose

The Dorset Coast - which has the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site

Location

From the East, on the A303, take the A3028 exit at the bottom of the hill before reaching Amesbury, cross over the A303 via the bridge and drive over the hill into Bulford. At the crossroads, turn left and immediately left again into Watergate Lane*.

200 yards down the lane, where there is a field on the right and a pair of houses on the left, take the right fork which leads to The Dovecot.

From the West, on the A303, pass the Countess roundabout north of Amesbury and take the first turning left, onto the A3028, signposted to Bulford. Then follow the above instructions.

From the South, drive through Amesbury to the Countess roundabout on the A303, turn right towards London and follow the instructions as if you were approaching from the West

From the North, on the A345, turn left at the roundabout at Durrington and follow the road into Bulford. Pass The Rose & Crown pub on your left and take the first turning right, after 100 yards, into Watergate Lane. Then follow the instructions on the left.

* The entrance to Watergate Lane is narrow and easily missed. If you reach The Rose & Crown pub, when entering Bulford from the East, turn round and try again!

On the map of Bulford below, Watergate Lane is shown at the base of the red circle, and the fork in the lane leading to The Dovecot is just to the left of the red circle.
