Bed and Breakfast Description
|
|
Originally an eighteenth-century hunting lodge, and then the family home of the author Reverend Tickner Edwardes, Burpham Country House offers a idyllic countryside setting amidst the wide skies and rolling hills of the Sussex downlands. Steve and Jackie Penticost now offer a superb location to escape the stresses and strains of modern life. With ten en-suite bedrooms we have the perfect venue for that relaxing getaway or the ideal place for that special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. You can chat and share local knowledge with other guests, kick off your shoes while enjoying a drink from our bar in our Georgian lounge, or watch the local wildlife while reading a good book in our garden. To complete the day, dine in our own beautiful restaurant. We use the very best local produce to create a Taste of Sussex in a perfect setting. Our bedrooms offer a range of choice, from king size and standard rooms to large four poster rooms with high ceilings and new limestone showers, or superkings with luxury bathrooms. All have TV, direct dial telephone, tea and coffee making facilities. Most have superb views of the South Downs and of our country garden. |

Local Attractions
|
walking and cycling in the downs We are ideally placed for walking and cycling, being close to the South Downs Way and the Monarch's Way. You can park and walk directly onto the South Downs, following the old Leper's Way up onto the Downs with its iron age earthworks, and with magnificent views to Arundelcastle, the Arun Valley, the sea and Isle of Wight.
Or follow the River Arun from Burpham village to the old church at South Stoke, mentioned in the Domesday book, and then north to Amberley or south to Arundel via the Black Rabbit. We have a great deal of wildlife here, from glow-worms to hares, pheasants and partridges as well as the rare chalkland butterflies and orchids. Old traditional flowers such as cornflowers, bluebells and poppies abound in the fields.
Arundel is the historic heart of the South Downs. Dominated by the 11th Century Norman Castle and Roman Catholic Cathedral which side by side, high on a hilltop dominating the view for miles. Arundel is full of quaint narrow streets, specialist shops and a wide variety of restuarants and cafes. Find out more by visiting Arundel Museum & Heritage centre or go the Visitor Information Centre.
The River Arun winds its way through the town and visitors can enjoy the river by hiring motor boats on the river or row boats on Swanborne Lake situated in Arundel Park, 1000 acres of beautiful parkland.
National Trust and English Heritage attractions The National Trust owns many of the South Downs sites of outstanding natural beauty, as well as historic houses and estates such as Uppark and Petworth. English Heritage manages many sites, including the Weald and Downland Museum, Fishbourne Roman Palace, and Boxgrove Priory. |
