Description
|
|
The Apothecary's House is an attractive three-storey Georgian House in the village of Askrigg at the centre of Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. Askrigg is a thriving village with three pubs, a village shop, a post office, a church, a café and a restaurant while Wensleydale, as one of the premier Yorkshire Dales, has a wide variety of local attractions. With a 4 Stars, Silver Award rating, the Apothecary's House is an ideal base for exploring all that the Yorkshire Dales have to offer whether it be touring; walking; cycling or simply relaxing in the beautiful countryside.
The house is centrally located in the village, just below Skeldale House, the surgery of the vet, James Herriot, in the well-known TV series "All Creatures Great and Small". It is so named because it was originally built in 1756 by the local apothecary, Dr. James Lightfoot, though it was re-modelled around 1850 in a Georgian style.
All of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities, colour TV, tea and coffee making facilities, clock radios, shaver points and hair dryers. An iron, ironing board, trouser press and broadband connection are also available on request. Guests have the use of a large TV lounge on the ground floor with log fires in the winter. We have ample private parking and a lock-up garage for the use of cyclists.
If there is anything that we can do to make your stay more enjoyable you have only to ask and we will do our best to oblige. |

Local Attractions
|
Askrigg was used for the filming of the TV series "All Creatures Great and Small" about the life of a Yorkshire vet. Skeldale house, the fictional vet's surgery is just up the road from us and across the road the King's Arms pub is the fictional Drover's Arms.
Bolton Castle, once the prison of Mary Queen of Scots lies 7 miles to the east. It is said that she once escaped for a few hours, dropping her shawl in Leyburn and this is the origin of the name of Leyburn Shawl - a picturesque area on the outskirts of Leyburn with fine views over Wensleydale.
There are several places to eat and drink including three pubs (the King's Arms, the White Rose and the Crown), a cafe (Sticky Ginger), a tea room (Sykes's House) and a restuarant (The Rowan Tree). A little further away is the Wensleydale Heifer for that extra special meal.
There are two pretty waterfalls, Mill Gill Force (70 ft) and Whitfield Gill Force (60 ft) a short walk out of the village.
Askrigg was once the main village in Wensleydale but with the building of the turnpike in the 18th century Hawes gradually rose to prominence.
Hawes houses the National Park Centre and Dales Countryside Museum, Wensleydale Cheese and the Hawes Ropemakers. It has a market on Tuesdays.
Leyburn has a cinema, a teapottery, a chocolate maker, a violin maker's, an auction house and many Craft workshops and galleries. Market day is Friday.
If you want more waterfalls, Hardraw Force, the highest single drop waterfall in England is 5.5 miles up the Dale while the famous Aysgarth Falls is less than 5 miles away down the Dale (i.e. to the East). Close to Aysgarth, Cauldron Falls in West Burton (painted by Turner) is also worth a visit.
