Bed and Breakfast Description

The Chiltern Guesthouse is situated just 300 yards from the sea and sands and 800 yards from the harbour, where you will find all the traditional attractions of a Yorkshire east coast resort.

Just outside the guest house there are views across the River Esk to the historic Whitby Abbey.

Cross the famous old swing bridge and take a walk along the cobbled streets with its quaint shops and you will be taken to the bottom of the famous 199 Abbey Stairs.

At the Abbey itself you can visit the 6th Century Church and the new visitor's centre. Why not also take some time out to visit the Captain Cook Museum?

Just a few miles from Whitby you can visit the 'Heartbeat' village of Goathland with the North Yorkshire Railway running through. The station has been used as a location in the film 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.

All around the Whitby area there is plenty to see and do, with the picturesque North Yorkshire Moors and York being well within travelling distance.

There are 9 bedrooms in total, with single, twin, family & double rooms available, all double and family rooms are en-suite. There are colour televisions, continental quilts and tea and coffee making facilities in all rooms. Access to your room is available throughout the day.

Whitby Attractions

One of Whitbys most famous landmarks! Most of the building work seen today is from the 12th and 13th centuries, but St Hildas Abbey was originally founded in 657, where the Synod of Whitby had bound English Christianity to that of Western Europe in 644. The Abbey housed both men and women, and was destroyed by the Danes in 867. The Danes then renamed the Anglo Saxon town of Streonshalh, Whitby! and began to colonise the Esk Valley. Farmers, trades and craftsmen migrated from Scandinavia to Whitby, and following conversion to Christianity built churches in the area. In the 11th century the Abbey was re-established for the Benedictine order, housing about 40 monks. Today, visitors can learn more about the history in the new visitors centre. Although I've not been into the centre, there are displays recording the development of the town, and its famous inhabitants, plus archeological finds, audio tours, interactive playcentre and tea room. At weekends, costumed guides are on hand!
