Local Attractions
|
Agricultural Shows
Melplash in August and Dorchester in September are the two big ones.
Animals and Birds
Various suggestions are listed under "Children" which will be of interest to adults too. See also "Riding", and for wildlife, check out the local RSPB reserves and the Kingcombe Centre. Also, on this site, see West Dorset Area & Wildlife
Biking Off Road
Guests tell us that the off-road biking in the area is superb. There is ample space to leave bikes locked up and we shall be getting a power-hose so you can wash them down easily after your ride. See Cycling below.
Children
Dorchester Museum has an interactive Children's Trail, while the Tithe Barn, Children's Farm and Swannery at Abbotsbury are much loved by children www.abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk. Children much love feeding the swans, especially when the signets are hatching in May and June.
Grays Farmhouse is near the World Heritage coast, which within a 25 minutes drive offers remarkable variety. Nearest to us is the National Trust family beach at Burton Bradstock, with golden honey-combed cliffs and an excellent cafe overlooking the beach. Slightly further afield to the east are the magnificent chalk cliffs and rock formations of the Isle of Purbeck, including Kimmeridge, Lulworth and Durdle Door, and to the west lie Charmouth and Lyme Regis.
Weymouth has a long sandy beach set in a beautiful, expansive bay, and a fascinating old harbour. The east coast of Portland is unique, with disused, luxuriantly overgrown quarries right by the water's edge. At the southern tip, Portland Bill has a lighthouse overlooking a wild shoreline piled with slabs of the famous stone from which many of London's grandest buildings were created. |

B&B Location
|
Directions from London, the North or East, via Maiden Newton & Toller Porcorum From either A35 or the A303, find your way onto the A37, linking Dorchester and Yeovil, and then leave it for Maiden Newton. If coming from Dorchester, continue through village, or, if from Yeovil, turn right by the corner shop in the centre of the village, onto the A356. Conitnue NW towards Crewkerne for just under 2 miles, passing a left hand no-through road to Toller Fratrum. At the top of the hill beyond that take the next left turn, signposted Toller Porcorum. Wind down into the village. Ignore right turn, which, though less distance, is more complicated. Instead continue winding through village, passing phone box on left, over disused railway bridge, along lane lined with cottages and then uphill heading SW. Approximately a mile from the village center, turn right, signposted Powerstock and Hooke**. Within a few hundred yards you will go under a low disused bridge, then the road rises for 1/3 mile and just round a slight bend you come to a tiny unmarked cross-road, with a lane on right and our track on left, with signs in the hedgerow, as illustrated above.
Directions from the South West via Bridport, 8-9 miles away.
From Bridport take the A35 east towards Dorchester for about 3 miles. At the end of a cutting turn left, signposted Askerswell. This road does not go into the village itself but skirts it and then rises over the top of Eggardon Hill (with superb views over to south Devon.) Continue past right turnings to Dorchester, Maiden Newton and Toller Porcorum ( approx.5 miles) where you join the route above, at junction marked**
