Description
|
|
Welcome to Strang Hall, where we are delighted to meet you as our Bed and Breakfast Guests.
Built in 1924 in the Arts and Crafts style for an American millionaire, Strang Hall was named after the family who originally lived here.
Situated in the hills above Totland Bay in beautiful West Wight, the house is set in its own peaceful grounds. All of the bedrooms have panoramic views over the sea, nearby Tennyson Down and the village - a beautiful setting for viewing spectacular sunsets over the West Dorset coast.
The approach to Strang Hall is over a quiet, country lane. Opposite the house are paddocks and footpaths which lead to a variety of walks and cycleways over the Downs and towards the sea, as well as interesting routes inland, such as around local Golden Hill Fort.
The house is on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beaches at popular Colwell Bay and attractive, more secluded Totland Bay are an easy walk. The Needles, Alum Bay and the distinctive coastline of Freshwater Bay are within easy reach by bus.
The Grand Bedroom with private bathroom
The Grand Bedroom on the first floor is so called because it has a king sized bed, is very large and has beautiful panoramic views of the sea, the Downs and the village.
Again, we have tried to maintain the Arts & Crafts ethos of the house, restoring the original oak joinery and splendid brick fireplace and keeping to a light, simple, uncluttered colour scheme.
As in all the bedrooms, the wardrobes and chests of drawers are the originals supplied by Messrs Shepherd & Hedger of Southampton, reputedly ships’ outfitters to the Queen Mary.
The comfortable private bathroom is just across the landing and has been completely refurbished with new sanitary ware, white tiling and so on.
The Double Bedroom
The Double Bedroom is next to the Grand Bedroom on the first floor. A little smaller than the Grand, it also has beautiful panoramic views of the sea, the Downs and the village.

Places to Explore
West Wight is renown for the beauty of its landscape, the far-reaching views of the sea and the Downs and the huge wide skies. Indeed, much of the region is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
There are numerous well-signed paths such as the Tennyson Trail and the Coastal Path, as well as a network of quiet country lanes and byways for walkers or cyclists.
The Needles, Alum Bay, and the magnificent SouthWest coastline with its fossil beaches, are all within a short drive.
The excellent beach at Totland Bay is within ten minutes walk and Colwell Bay and Freshwater Bay beaches are very close by.
If you like gardens, be sure to visit Mottistone Gardens (National Trust) as well as the many private gardens open under the National Garden Scheme
If you are interested in photography, Dimbola Lodge Photographic Museum at Freshwater Bay has a fascinating display of works by the pioneering Julia Margaret Cameron as well as exhibitions by contemporary internationally known photographers.
Places to Eat
There are plenty of places to eat locally – our guests have recommended good pub food at The Vine, The Highdown Inn or The Red Lion at Freshwater; lunches or cream teas at Dimbola Lodge cafe or Mottistone Gardens or, for more formal dining, The Farringford Hotel, The Country Garden Hotel Restaurant and the Waterfront Restaurant, Totland. The George or The Blue Crab both at Yarmouth have also been suggested. |

How to Find Us by Road
From Yarmouth, take the A3054 (Colwell Road) in the direction of Colwell Bay and Totland. On arriving at the roundabout on the outskirts of Totland, continue straight on ( the road is called The Broadway), passing a garage on your right, until you reach Kendal Road on your left. There is a hairdresser's called Focus on the corner of Kendal Road and the Broadway. Turn into Kendal Road, drive up to the top where it meets Uplands Road. Kendal Road will have become unmade about half way up.
At the intersection with Uplands Road, turn right. Uplands Road is also unmade and, counting from the house on the corner of Kendal Road at the intersection, we are the third house along on the right hand side, with a high stone wall and wrought iron gates. Our concrete parking space is opposite us, next to a pony paddock.
