Bed and Breakfast Description
|
|
Peter and Gill welcome you to Kirklands. Our beautiful home, built in 1832, is set in 2 acres of stunning gardens and 20 acres of important naturally regenerating woodland. Our bed and breakfast accommodation may particularly appeal to garden lovers but for whatever reason you visit us you can be sure of a warm and friendly reception. We offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation - one double/family room with en-suite bathroom overlooking the front of the house with views to the Ochils and one twin/double room with en-suite bathroom overlooking the courtyard and the rockery with the woodland beyond.
Our 2 acre garden has been created by us since 1977 and includes a walled garden, herbaceous borders, rockery garden, woodland garden, woodland walk, bog garden and bluebell walk. We have tried to ensure that we have something of interest in every month of the year.
Over the last few years we have been collecting seeds and dividing the larger plants in the garden. Initially we sold them to visitors on our open days when the garden was opened for charity under the Scotland Garden Scheme. We now offer plants for sale throughout the year to garden visitors. Our stock changes regularly and all plants are raised in the garden. |

The Garden When we arrived at Kirklands in 1977 the garden had long since disappeared. The walled garden was home to two ponies and there was just a patch of grass to the front and rear of the house, the rest was rough ground and woodland. Over the years we have created the garden.
Initially, when the family were young, Peter and a retired miner, Benny, rebuilt the walls and removed overgrown or dead trees. As the children grew we all joined in, ably assisted by our German Shepherd, Bradie. Now Louisa and Mark have left home and we are helped in the garden by our German Shepherd, Harley.
The garden is open from April to September on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00pm to 5:30pm, other times are probably OK, but please give us a call first (01383 852737).
Plant Sales
We completed the polytunnel in May 2004 and constructed a small plant sales area. All the plants are those that thrive in the garden so you will find potted-on self seeded hellebores and perennial digitalis, divisions from our wonderful meconopsis and cuttings from the osteospernums that survive the Saline winters and much, much more.
We are the perfect base to tour Scotland, secluded, yet central for sightseeing in Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth and Glasgow. For golfers we are perfectly located between St Andrews and Gleneagles. For walkers, we have the Ochils close by. For cyclists the Millennium Cycleway and the Blairadam Forest Trails. For those interested in history we have the beautifully preserved village of Culross, Castle Campbell, the Wallace Monument (Brave Heart) and the town of Dunfermline where the Kings and Queens of Scotland were crowned and the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was born - all within a short distance. Within a few miles we have the Knockhill Race Track for the motor bike and car enthusiasts.
