Description

For lovers of idyllic Sussex country side and its many pursuits, few pubs can boast as fine a location as The Sportsman with its unrivalled panoramic views across the breathtaking Amberley WildBrooks.

The haunting beauty of the glorious country side with its wealth of wildlife and seasonal changes, once seen can never be forgotten.

It's fine reputation and its atmosphere of true home-from-home hospitality and relaxed friendliness is extended to all, be they regulars or passing visitors.

The Sportsman has five guest bedrooms, three double, two twin, each with en-suite bathroom and country furnishing and decor, offering comfortable accommodation and hearty English or continental style breakfast.

Ideal for walkers and cyclists following the South Down Way, or holiday guests exploring the many delights of the Arun Valley and beyond.

Each room is named for its local associations - Arun, Rackham, South Downs, Wildbrooks and Crossgates, some share the lovely outlook across the water meadows while others glimpse the undulating backdrop of the downland hills.

One bathroom is fully fitted to accommodate disabled access. Please contact us to make sure our facilities are adequate to your needs.

Local Attractions

The Sportsman is located on the fringe of the village known as Amberley Known as the 'the pearl of the South Downs', whose many thatched cottages and pretty gardens lend immense charm, while its great antiquity is highlighted by its Norman Church and medieval castle.

The Amberley Wildbrooks and the River Arun are a must for bird watchers, whose stay can be enhanced by a trip to the RSPB's important site at Pulborough and to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Arundel.

The Elizabethan masterpiece, Parham House, set in its own highly prized gardens and deer park is located within two miles.
The Amberley Working Museum located near the railway station, traces the exhibits.

The Roman Villa at Bignor (four miles) has extensive remains of original buildings and mosaics. Arundel, (five miles) with its famous castle, also boasts myriad little antique shops and markets, making it a magnet for lovers of antiques.

There is horse racing at Fontwell (eight miles) and, of course, glorious Goodwood (12 miles), where there are also a motor racing and classic car events.

Historic Chichester (14 miles) offeres many attractions from Roman sites at Fishbourne to its celebrated Festival Theatre, as well as its magnificent cathedral.

The Sportsman is located just off the B2139 which joins both the A29 London to Bognor Regis road and the A283 at Storrington.

Trains to Amberley take approximately one hour and twenty minutes from London Victoria, or forty minutes from Gatwick
