Bed and Breakfast Description

The Boot Inn is a traditional 9 bedroom Lakeland Inn dating in parts from 1578 that nestles in a magnificent setting amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in England. There is a traditional bar with log fire, a beamed restaurant, a spacious conservatory, a games room and a drying/boot room. Outside there is a beer garden where we hold barbecues in summer, a play area for children and the kitchen garden. Well behaved dogs are most welcome. There are myriad walks from the doorstep. Why not come and spend a few days in this most beautiful corner of the Lake District?

The nine bedrooms all have ensuite bathroom facilities and are comfortably furnished as well as having tea and coffee making facilities. Each room has one very special feature - the spectacular view. The inn is surrounded by mountains - Scafell Pike, Harter Fell and Great Gable to name but a few. They are within daily walking distance of the Inn and overlook the Eskdale Valley.

At the end of an energetic day relax in the Main Bar or the Snug, next to a roaring log fire. As we are the only Inn in the Valley that has, for a number of years, been listed in both the Good Pub Guide and the Good Beer Guide, why not try one of our cask Real Ales?

In the evening you may dine in either the Restaurant or the Main Bar, selecting from our extensive menu featuring local produce; meat from the Valley and fish from the Lakes. Choose from our well-stocked wine cellar, which have been specially selected from around the world to complement the food.

Local Attractions

Eskdale has been described as" the finest of all valleys" by no less a critic than the great walker Alfred Wainwright.Equal in his praise was John Ruskin who thought Eskdale was "the gateway to Paradise".

When you explore the valley with its meadows and fells dotted with Herdwick sheep, the river Esk tumbling over its rocky path under countless ancient bridges and forming in places, pools of deep crystal clear water you will realise why these great men were so enthusiastic about Eskdale.

In this area it is perfectly possible to choose a walk where you won't meet another person all day. The serious fell walker can hike over England's highest mountains to England's deepest lake straight from the door of the Boot Inn. Those who prefer something less strenuous will find countless walks through woodlands and fields, riverside rambles and gentle fell walking. There is truly something for everyone.

Whilst out on the fells keep a look out for a small token peeping out from under a rock or a bush -- find one with a Boot on it and you will get a free pint at Boot inn!

B&B Location

Proceed North up the M6 Motorway, leaving at Junction 36.

Turn Left onto the A590 Dual Carriageway and stay on this road for 3 miles, before turning left onto a slip road signed A590 Barrow. Turn left at the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road onto the A590. (This is mostly Dual Carriageway.) After 6 miles you come to a roundabout which you need to turn right at, again onto the A590, and signed Barrow and Newby Bridge.

Proceed along this road for a further 11 miles before coming to a right turn, at a place called Greenodd, onto the A5092 (A595) and signed Workington and Whitehaven. Carry on along this road for approximately 11.5 miles until you reach Duddon Bridge with (permanent) Traffic Lights – turn right signed Ulpha and Seathwaite.

At this point the roads get (a lot) narrower! 3.7 miles later turn left (signed Eskdale and Whitehaven) 300 yards after the Post Office. Up the “short, sharp, shock” hill, and over the hills for 6.5 miles.

When you reach the King George IV pub, turn right – signed Boot and Eskdale Railway. You’re almost there!

After another 1.8 miles turn left just after Brook House – we are just up here on the left. The car park entrance is to the rear. Now you deserve a drink!
