Bed and Breakfast Description

Named after an old ship of the Line, Fortitude Cottage overlooks the quayside at the heart of Old Portsmouth. Situated a few yards from the ancient fortifications which give unrivelled views of the ships as they pass through the harbour entrance. Established forty three years ago, Fortitude Cottage enjoys an excellent reputation for providing welcoming and comfortable accommodation combined with quality. There are four prettily furnished bedrooms and immaculately maintained, each with TV and tea/coffee making facilities. All are decorated in delicate pastel shades with views over the water. Breakfasts are served in a bow windowed dining room with a view of the fishing boats and ferries.

For lunches and evening meals, there is an excellent selection of tea rooms, bistros, restaurants and pubs all within a few minutes walk.

Fortitude Cottage has won ''Britain in Bloom'' awards for her window boxes and hanging baskets; and Heartbeat'' for healthy food choices.

Local Attractions
To walk through Old Portsmouth today, with its cobbled streets, charming pubs and restaurants is a walk through maritime history. Narrow side streets and old fortitfications reveal a medieval community huddled together within town walls.Much still remains to entrigue. For over 800 years every English monarch with the exception of Mary Tudor, passed down the ancient High Street. It was in these streets that press gangs roamed seeking new recruits for the Navy, and where sailors took their ease, as sailors will! Standing proudly at the corner of Broad Street and High Street, the Square Tower was the official residence of the towns military governor.

This bed & breakfast is one of the most ideally located as all the attractions of Portsmouth and Southsea are within walking distance such as,maritime England on your doorstep, with the ships, HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and HMS Mary Rose, all the Royal Naval museums and the Royal Marines museum. Other attractions include Gunwharf Quays, Southsea Castle and Charles Dickens birthplace. The Round Tower, Square Tower, Fort Nelson, Submarine Museum and Portchester Castle.
 

B&B Location
From the M27 exit junction 12 "Portsmouth & Ferries" to the M275. Pick up signs for "Old Portsmouth, IOW Ferries" and follow. Then follow signs for "Old Portsmouth, Cathedral". Go past the Cathedral, you will be in the High Street which if followed to end takes you straight into Broad street and we are at the end number 51.
