Description

At Coldbeck House Bed & Breakfast our aim is to offer guests the opportunity to relax and take a break from everyday life while enjoying the comforts and little luxuries provided to make a stay here something rather special. On your arrival you will be welcomed with a cup of tea and home made cake or biscuits by the log burning stove in the sitting room or, during the summer months, beside the croquet lawn in the garden.

Coldbeck House was originally Georgian, built circa 1820 then later converted to a Victorian gentleman’s residence. The house is full of light, with lovely views – either over the garden or the village. There are many unique and special features in and around the house – especially some splendid examples of Victorian stained and coloured glass. The 2 acre grounds can be explored via woodland paths and garden enthusiasts will find a wealth of interesting plants and specimen trees to identify and a small bog garden on the site of the monastery fish pond!

All three rooms are en suite and individually designed and equipped with all the little extras that we hope will make your stay memorable. Each room has a television, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, and a CD player with a small selection of CDs and many other touches await you.

The Howgill Room is a lovely light room with a marvellous bay window which gives views up to Green Bell on the Howgills.

The Leat Room is a twin bedded room with lovely antique furniture, overlooking the gardens and village.

The Scandale Room is a bright and sunny room has views of the mill leat and front garden and then over the beck to the village church.

Local Attractions

The charming village of Ravenstonedale, which lies at the foot of the Howgills, maintains its unhurried lifestyle with traditional houses and cottages and is excellently situated - convenient for both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. There is a thriving colony of red squirrels which scurry about the village and dart about within the garden itself and a wide variety of birds – including a greater spotted woodpecker and treecreeper - which feed regularly at the bird tables.

Five minutes from the M6, the village nestles at the foot of the Howgills which offer wonderful hill walking and interesting low level walks too in all directions straight from the door and the Coast to Coast walk passes close by too. There are some lovely quiet lanes and back roads to cycle along and there are always places to have refreshment en route. Riding too is available nearby.

If you enjoy being at one with nature, a must-see is Cautley Spout, a waterfall situated on the lonely Howgill Fells, always dramatic but, at it's most spectacular after heavy rain.

Very quick access to the M6 motorway brings both the Northern and Southern Lakes within easy reach. Ullswater and Keswick are 40 minutes away with Haweswater only a 30 minute drive. Ullswater Steamers run cruises on Ullswater 363 days of the year, offering an relaxing way to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the area.

Brougham Castle, the ruins of a 13th Century fortress, is located on the banks of the River Eamont, just two miles outside Penrith.

The thriving local town of Kirkby Stephen is only 5 miles away and has some interesting antique shops as well as a collection of other everyday shops and facilities. The Settle - Carlisle Railway stops at Kirkby Stephen station which is just 4 minutes drive from the village.
