Description

Chaplin House was built in 1797 as an alehouse and until 2003 was still called Chaplin Arms. It played an important part in the life of the village: in the past, the first floor at the front of the house was one large room in which parish meetings and other public gatherings were held. The building was last used as a public house in 1923. It then became the village post office and a shop until the early sixties when it gradually began to fall into disrepair. Since 1982 various owners have gradually rescued the building, and in the last two years we have converted the barn and some of the outbuildings for guests.

The lounge still retains the original cast iron range, made in Lincoln. Although it is no longer used for cooking, the fire in the range is lit on winter evenings and it is easy to imagine life as it was lived here until the middle of the last century.

The accommodation comprises 3 rooms, one double in the house and two in the new barn conversion: a twin bedded fully accessible room downstairs and a family room upstairs. All rooms are spacious and en suite, with power showers and heated towel rails. The twin bedded room has an en suite wet room and the family room has a bath with power shower. TV, DVD, clock radio and tea and coffee making facilities are available in each room.

There is a comfortable lounge area in the barn conversion available for guests' exclusive use, with access to a decked area overlooking the large rear garden. A cot and high chair are available if needed.

Local Attractions

Directly opposite us is Holmdale House Garden and Nursery, specialising in less common hardy plants, offering delicious homemade teas and selling curios and collectables. Whilst there, you could also browse amongst the antique clothing and jewellery at ' Arsenic and Old Lace' .

The village pub, offering lunches and evening meals Tuesday to Sunday, is a 100 yards stroll up the road. On the edge of the village is Car Dyke, a Roman waterway, from which there are wonderful views across the Lincolnshire countryside.

For those interested in sporting activities, the National Golf Centre is at Woodhall Spa, only 4 miles away; we are only 3 miles from the Viking Way long distance footpath for walkers; cycling is a pleasure through the open country of the wolds beyond Woodhall Spa; or there is fishing on the nearby River Witham.

If you are drawn to the arts and crafts, you will want to visit Horncastle, a pretty town in the Lincolnshire Wolds, renowned for its numerous antique shops, or 13 miles to the south, Sleaford, a bustling market town and home to the newly opened Hub, the UK' s largest center for craft design and making.
